Why IKEA Works

IKEA's flat-pack model is genuinely ingenious. By shipping products as compact boxes rather than assembled furniture, IKEA dramatically reduces transport costs — and passes those savings on. The result is well-designed, durable furniture at prices that make regular home upgrades accessible for almost everyone.

The other genius of IKEA is the modular system. The KALLAX, BILLY, PAX, and BESTA ranges are all designed to grow with you — you can start small and add pieces over time, mixing and matching within the system as your needs evolve.

IKEA's Essential Ranges

  • KALLAX: The iconic cube shelf — perfect for living rooms, kids' rooms, and home offices. Available in multiple sizes and dozens of finishes.
  • BILLY: The world's best-selling bookcase. Adjustable shelves, multiple widths, and extensions to reach ceiling height.
  • PAX: The wardrobe system. Mix frame sizes, doors, and internal fittings to create a custom storage solution.
  • BESTA: TV units, cabinets, and wall storage. Clean lines and a wide range of door options.
  • POÄNG: The beloved armchair — a design classic that's remained in the range since 1977. Comes in a surprisingly manageable flat-pack.
  • LACK: The ultra-affordable side table and TV bench range. Almost absurdly flat-packed — perfect for small car transport.

Car-Friendly IKEA Picks

IKEA publishes packaged dimensions on every product page. Here are some of the most popular items and how they load:

The IKEA Loading System

The key to a perfect IKEA haul is a loading order that maximises space and keeps boxes stable:

  • Longest boxes first. Load flat along the boot floor — boxes like BILLY and PAX frames define the base layer.
  • Heaviest boxes next. KALLAX and HEMNES units are dense — they sit best at the bottom, against the back of the seat.
  • Flat, thin boxes on top. LACK tables, shelf boards, and similar panels stack perfectly on top of heavier boxes.
  • Fill gaps with soft IKEA goods. Cushions, textiles, plants, and kitchen accessories fill the remaining gaps and prevent boxes sliding.
  • Seat fold is your secret weapon. Folding one or both rear seats dramatically increases the haul capacity of most hatchbacks and SUVs.
