Festival Car Packing: Fit Everything for 3 Days of Fun
Festival season is here. Whether it is a 3-day camping festival or a day trip, packing smart means you do not spend the first hour rearranging a broken game of Tetris in a muddy car park. Here is how to nail it.
Know Your Car's Actual Boot Space
Before you start piling gear on the lounge room floor, know your numbers. A typical hatchback gives you around 350–450L of boot space. A mid-size SUV jumps to 500–700L. With rear seats folded, most hatchbacks reach 1,000–1,200L — enough for two people's full festival kit.

The Zone System for Festival Packing
Think of your boot as three zones and load them in reverse access order:
- Zone 1 (deepest / first in): Tent, sleeping mats, trestle table, anything you will not need until you arrive. Heavy and flat.
- Zone 2 (middle): Chairs, sleeping bags, clothing bags, shoes. Fills the vertical space above Zone 1 items.
- Zone 3 (boot opening / last in, first out): Esky, snacks, water bottles, first-aid kit, phone chargers.
Keep a "car essentials" bag in the cabin — phone charger, sunscreen, snacks, festival wristband — so you are not digging through the boot on arrival.
Fitting 4 People's Gear in One Car
- Share the tent. One person brings the tent, everyone else compensates with sleeping bags and mats.
- One big esky, not four small ones. A single 65L esky takes roughly the same space as four individual 15L ones but carries far more.
- Compression sacks for sleeping bags. A standard sleeping bag can compress from 50cm to 25cm diameter.
- Duffel bags only. Soft bags fill gaps that rigid luggage wastes.
- Use the footwells. Each rear seat footwell can hold a pair of shoes, a small bag, or a day pack.
Car Type Matchups for Festival Groups
Solo / couple — small hatchback: A Toyota Yaris or Mazda 2 with rear seats folded works for two people's full festival kit.
3–4 people — large hatchback or SUV: A Toyota Corolla hatch with seats folded or a Mazda CX-5 comfortably handles 3–4 people's festival gear.
5+ people — large SUV or two cars: For big groups, consider whether splitting across two cars beats cramming everything into one.
Roof storage: A rooftop cargo box (70L–450L) can carry all sleeping bags and soft clothing, freeing the entire boot for hard items and the esky.
Festival-Specific Packing Hacks
- Pre-freeze water bottles and use them as ice blocks — they keep the esky cold and you drink them as they melt.
- Pack your post-festival clean clothes in a separate bag at the very back.
- Leave the boot mat at home — lay down a cheap tarpaulin instead.
- Cable tie a small garbage bag to the headrest for in-car rubbish during the drive.
